Find Your Birthstone
In the Middle Ages often the beholder would own all 12 stones set in various jewellery and would wear one a month. It has become custom over the years to only possess the stone which lands on your birthday.
A variety of stones are connected to each month and differ between cultures. An official list of birthstones by month including colour and meaning was therefore created by The National Association of Jewellers in 1952 and is updated from time to time. The latest addition was tanzanite in 2002.
January : Garnet
Garnets are a brilliant Bohemian dark red colour and are associated with properties and attributes such as faith, love and courage. Wearing Garnet can help prevent nightmares in children, and it may also be used for building energy levels. Garnet is known to increase self-worth and evoke romance granting loyalty and affection. Sparkling white diamonds as most of us already know are connected with eternal love. April’s birthstone also symbolizes romance and courage and is known to ward off insanity. This stone was discovered in India about 2500 years ago where the inhabitants called them splinters from the stars. This rare gemstone was discovered in Russia in 1834 and uniquely changes colour from red to green dependant on the light. Often described as ‘ruby by day, emerald by night’. Alexandrite is believed to improve intuition, imagination, creative powers, and psychic abilities. It brings peace, calm, and harmonious emotional states to the wearer. Today most Alexandrite comes from Sri Lanka, Brazil and East Africa as the Russian resources have dwindled however the colour pales in comparison to the vivid Russian gemstones.July: Ruby
